The owner of the three remaining lots/houses on the block that are not owned by the school district offers to let the district buy them. The school board plans to consider the bids they received at their next meeting.

The school board decides not to go through with buying the three lots on the block that were offered to them. The lots, which face “I street directly behind the Lowell school” were offered for a price of $12,000.

A wind storm damages Lowell’s roof.

George Weyerhaeuser, an eight-year-old Lowell student and great-grandson of Weyerhaeuser founder Frederick Weyerhaeuser was kidnapped and held for ransom. He was kidnapped after he left Lowell school to walk to Annie Wright school, where his sister attended.

The school board votes to ask the city to vacate the alley behind Lowell, in order to expand and regrade the play area.

JANUARY 9, 1937
The school board’s request for the vacation of the alley behind Lowell is protested by the land owner of the property on the corner of the block.
FEBRUARY 24, 1937
The city council approves the vacation of the alley. This will allow more room for the playgrounds.
MARCH 12, 1937

The school board authorizes the city to maintain the light poles in the vacated alley.
APRIL 6, 1937
Students threatened to strike “if Lowell grounds weren’t given the same amount of manicuring other school grounds are receiving.” Luckily, the strike was averted when a WPA (Works Progress Administration) crew arrived to work on the school grounds.
